I provide one service:
Professional writing. My specialty is the non-profit sector. As a fundraiser and
writer with over 20 years experience, I know how to effectively convey your
mission or write an influential appeal that motivates your donors to support
your organization.
Why do you need a professional writer?
To accomplish your goal by presenting a clearly written and compelling piece.
Thereby, you get the maximum impact for your dollars.
You will forego communication pieces that are
frequently ineffective because they are mired in turgid prose, lost in a tangle
of twisted syntax, lose sight of their purpose or lull the reader to sleep with
languid language.
What are my qualifications?
Extensive experience in journalism, public relations, freelance writing, non-profit management and fundraising, including:
- Bachelor's and master's degrees in journalism from
the universities of Texas and Missouri, respectively
- More than 20 years experience as a development and
planned giving officer with Texas Wesleyan University, Trinity University and
the Arthritis Foundation
- Writer of hundreds of direct mail appeals, speeches,
brochures, proposals, news releases, press kits and web content.
- Nearly 10 years experience as a reporter and editor
for United Press International, the Dallas Times Herald and Fort Worth
Star-Telegram
- Professor of journalism at Utica University in New
York
- Freelance writer for publications ranging from The
New York Times to Texas Parks & Wildlife Magazine
- Frequent contributor to Exempt and the NonProfit
Times on fundraising and the non-profit industry
- Handling corporate and municipal clients as an account executive for a public relations agency
What kind of assignments do I handle?
Working with both non-profit and corporate clients, I do:
- Direct mail appeals
- Annual reports
- Brochures
- News releases
- Web content
- Speeches
- Proposals
- Newsletter articles
- Op-ed pieces
- News releases and press kits
What does it cost to hire me for a project?
- Fees are based on the scope of the project
- Fee covers all revisions and rewriting, provided they are requested within 30 days of my submitting a draft and are not based on a change in the initial assignment
Generally
speaking, a one-page news release starts at $200; newsletter article, $300;
simple direct mail letter, $500; and one-fold fund-raising brochure, $500. These
fees are less than what you would incur if you placed a dollar value on the
amount of time you would spend on the same project. This frees you to focus on
other aspects of your job.
How long will it take me to write your copy?
For most projects, I like to have 2-3 weeks to work on your copy. (I can
turn a job around much faster if you are on tight deadline.)
A project
ordinarily consists of the following:
1) an initial meeting with you to
discuss the scope of the work (for simpler jobs, this can be accomplished via
phone conversations and email exchanges)
2) gathering background material,
doing any research and interviews that may be required
3) writing, editing and polishing the material until you are 100% satisfied
